Want to explore the Cozumel east side? Away from the cruise piers and busier tourist areas, you’ll find a completely different side of the island—open Caribbean views, rugged coastline, beautiful beaches and places where you can simply stop and enjoy Cozumel.
Many visitors arrive in Cozumel without realizing how different the east side feels from the west side. There are fewer buildings, less traffic and long stretches of coastline where the scenery becomes the attraction. For me, this is where you can slow down and experience a little more of the Cozumel I know and love.
Take the Coastal Road to Cozumel’s East Side
Getting to the east side is part of the experience. As you travel across the island, the busy areas begin to disappear and the scenery opens up to the Caribbean. Once you reach the coast, the road follows the shoreline with beautiful views along the way.
One stop I enjoy showing visitors is El Mirador, a natural rock formation along the coast where the waves have shaped the limestone over time. It’s a great place to get out, walk around and take photos with the Caribbean in the background.
But don’t rush from one stop to another. Part of enjoying Cozumel’s east side is being able to pull over when something catches your eye, take a few pictures and enjoy the view before continuing around the island.
Enjoy the Beaches — But Respect the Caribbean
The beaches on Cozumel’s east side are beautiful, but they are very different from many of the calmer beaches on the west side of the island. The open Caribbean can bring stronger waves and currents, so not every beach is a good place for swimming or snorkeling.
That doesn’t make the east side any less special. Some of the best moments are simply walking along the shore, watching the waves, taking photos or finding a peaceful place to sit and enjoy the view.
If you want to get in the water, ask your local guide about the conditions that day and where it is safe to swim. The Caribbean changes, and knowing the island helps you choose the right place to stop.
Stop, Relax and Enjoy the East Side
Exploring Cozumel’s east side shouldn’t feel like a race. Part of the experience is stopping somewhere along the coast, sitting down with a cold drink and enjoying the Caribbean view.
One popular stop is Welcome to Miami, where visitors can relax with a fresh mojito while looking out over the ocean. It’s the kind of place where you might plan to stop for a few minutes and end up wanting to stay a little longer.
That relaxed pace is one of the things I love most about this side of Cozumel. You don’t always need an attraction or an activity. Sometimes a beautiful view, a good drink and good company are enough.

Try Some Local Food Along the Way
A day exploring Cozumel is even better when you make time for good food. Instead of rushing back toward the tourist areas for lunch, you can stop along the way and enjoy a meal with the Caribbean right in front of you.
Places like Punta Morena are popular stops on the east side where you can relax, enjoy Mexican food and seafood, and take in the ocean views. For many visitors, sitting down for lunch becomes just as memorable as the sightseeing.
I always tell guests that experiencing Cozumel isn’t only about the places you visit. It’s also about the food you try, the people you meet and having enough time to actually enjoy where you are.
Explore the Cozumel East Side With a Local
You can drive around Cozumel and see beautiful scenery on your own, but exploring with someone who lives here can make the experience very different. A local guide knows where to stop, which places fit your interests and how to make the most of the time you have on the island.
After more than 15 years of showing visitors around Cozumel, I’ve learned that every group is different. Some guests want beaches and photos. Others want local food, history or simply a relaxing drive around the island. I enjoy getting to know my guests and letting the day develop around what they enjoy most.
For me, being a guide isn’t only about showing you where to go. It’s about sharing the island I call home and helping you experience a side of Cozumel you might not discover on your own.
